Mississippi Bluesman Steve Gardner, based in Tokyo, Japan, plays original, acoustic roots and country blues music, finger picking and slide on National guitars, with harmonica, banjo, washboard and a variety of hand made instruments. He combines his music with his intimate black and white photographs of the people and place of the blues.
Steve Gardner plays and tours Japan, where many of his tours have been sponsored by the Cultural Affairs section of the United States, State Department. Steve also plays regularly in Singapore and Indonesia as well as the South-eastern United States and Europe. Steve plays solo and with the Bottleneck Blues Band- his steady back up group since 1995. and recently he has been touring in the USA with the Jake Leg Stompers string band, based out of Nashville, TN. with whom he recorded his latest CDs, Walking The Dog and JERICHO.

Growing up down in Mississippi, Steve Gardner played with blues great Sam Chatmon, Booby Barnes, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Jack Owens and many more. He has also opened shows and played shows with Kim Wilson and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Mojo Bufford, Shemekia Copeland, Gate Mouth Brown, Howard Tate, Jimmy and Eddie Burns, Jimmy Dawkins, Corey Harris, Harmonica Shaw, Washboard Chaz, Ben E. King, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and many others.

ブルースはいつも、僕の生活のなかにあった。

「僕がブルースのとりこになったのは、子どものころ。1956年に生まれた僕の生活の中には、カントリー・バンドの音楽のギターやハーモニカとともに、野原や畑を渡る低いうめきのような音楽がいつもあった。日曜日の教会の開け放たれた窓から飛び出してくるゴスペルの歌声、つけっぱなしのラジオからガンガン流れてくるブラック・ミュージック・・・。土曜の夕べに魚を揚げるとき、聞こえてくるのもブルースだった」

スティーブ・ガードナー

サザン・ミシシッピー大学ジャーナリスム科卒業後、地元の日刊紙ジャクソン・ディリー・ニューズ社写真部に勤務のかたわら、サム・チャットマン（チャーリー・パットンの従兄弟でミシシッピー・シークのメンバー）など、ミシシッピー・デルタのブルースマンたちとの親交を深め、ブルースの手ほどきを受ける。1980年に来日し、「タイム」「ニューズウィーク」誌などでフォト・ジャーナリストとして活躍。いっぽう、東京のブルース・シーンでブルース・ハーピストとして知られるようになる。その後、東京とミシシッピーを往復し、ジャック・オーエンス、ジェシー・メイ・ヒンピルをは
じめ、デルタのブルースメンの写真を撮り続け、1994年に写真集『Rambling Mind』を出版した。

1996年にボトルネック・ブルースバンドを結成して以来、ライブ活動を精力的に開始。2002年にファーストＣＤ『Rambling With The Blues』、2005年にセカンドＣＤ『Big Delta Crossing』、2007年にサードＣＤ『JERICHO』をリリース。2008年の夏にはアメリカン・ルーツ＆ブルース・ミュージックをニューオリンズで録音し、4枚目のＣＤ『Walking The Dog』として年末に発売の予定。明治大学講師。ブルースとアメリカ南部の文化に関する講義を東京の各大学で行っている。
